MYTHOLOGY OF OUR BOTANICALS

Juniper berries

Juniper was a symbol of the Canaanites’ fertility goddess Ashera. In mediaeval times the berries were also used to flavor whisky in Scotland. The illicit Highland whisky stills hidden away in the glens, used juniper wood for fuel so that the near absence of smoke would not attract the suspicions of the local excise man.

Coriander

A warm, nutty, spicy, orange-flavored herb. The oldest Coriander fruits have been discovered in the Nahal Hemar cave in Israel and are thought to be 8,000 years old. In Chinese Mythology it was believed that the seeds from the Coriander plant, would have the power to grant immortality.

Angelica root

Also known as Archangel, Masterwort, Ground Ash, Holy Ghost Root, Angelica was used in mythology to communicate to other realms especially the fairy and angelica dimension including Archangel Michael. Don’t confuse with the deadly water hemlock if you find yourself wild crafting

Citrus peel

The high energy scent of citrus peel is said to communicate the joy of angels to mere mortals, lift spirits and provide direction to those who are lost. Used in spellwork for love, luck, money, prediction and moon magic

Licorice root

A herbaceous perennial, often called sweetwood, there are more than 300 different compounds in licorice, some of which have antiviral and antimicrobial properties. In witchcraft, it was used to for love spells. Licorice root was also amongst the many treasures found in the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb from 1350 BC

Cassia

The Cassia Tree, grows in Vietnam, China, Indonesia and Central America. Cassia, an exotic and prized variety of cinnamon with a holy and regal lineage, has been a part Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic practices consistently for nearly 5000 years. Cassia, along with grape vines and ivy, is a sacred plant of Dionysus, the Greek god of ecstasy. The Phoenix, the bird that rises from its ashes in mythology, uses cassia, myrrh and spikenard to build the magic fire in which it is reborn. The Egyptian queen Cleopatra was famous for her use of seductive oils and scents, and no doubt employed cassia oil in her arsenal.
